Manifesto: (Noun.) A public declaration of intentions, opinions, objectives, or motives.

What does it mean to be an Artist?

A creator of inspiration, emotion and depth - three things that are impossible to have definite meaning; being that they all depend on the individual’s solitary experience. Responsibility comes with this power of creation as well as contribution to the well being of human nature and society.

When disasters occur, when depression sets in, when reality is unbearable; the

Arts seem to provide a comfort that gives insight, reassurance or sometimes even

an escape to those looking for one. This is a job? For people with the right side brain

function – it is. An artist’s (actor, painter, singer, dancer, chef, sculpture, fighter, etc.)

ability to gain inspiration from daily life, different cultures, the imagination; then trains,

practices, and develops acute skill levels; and finally transforming those ideas into stories, emotions, food, movement,

paintings, and so on and so forth. Art; it is beautiful, frightening, complex, and extremely hard to execute at times, but is worth the effort to feel the ultimate high of personal joy.

An artist’s audience is of utmost importance in that it is one of the main reasons why we create. We want our fingertips, mouth, words, and images to touch those around us – to share how we experience the world in metaphoric and/or realistic ways. As an actor, I believe our greatest ability should be that of empathy. It is our job to embody the characters within the story and to contribute to the telling of the story. Would it be a ridiculous assumption then that actors should be the greatest examples of selflessness and positivity; being that they should have this innate ability?

It is my opinion that artists have unique gifts and abilities for a purpose and that purpose is to contribute positively to the well being of society; to constantly question themselves to be not only better artists, but better individuals and citizens as well.

Otherwise – why would anyone want to listen or watch a hypocrite?
